FOUR WAYS TO FOSTER

Pick the Program That Fits Your Life

Every program is different. Every one of them saves lives. Find the one that works for your schedule, your home, and your comfort level.

FT

Foster-to-Train

5 to 7 day commitment

Shelter dogs that sit in kennels do not improve. You take them home, teach basic obedience and house manners, and they come back ready for adoption. Trained dogs get adopted two to three times faster.

Your Responsibilities

Teach sit, stay, come, and leash manners
Work on crate training and housebreaking
Socialize with people and other animals
Follow the provided training plan daily

Good Fit If You

Can commit to 5 to 7 days
Have a yard or regular walking space
Want to see a real transformation
Enjoy working with dogs one-on-one
FF

Finder-to-Foster

Until reunited or placed (typically 7 to 30 days)

Found a stray? Instead of dropping them at a shelter, you keep them safe while we work to find their owner or match them with an adopter. You skip the shelter entirely. The animal stays calm. The owner has a real chance of getting their pet back.

Your Responsibilities

Provide a safe temporary home
Report the found pet through our system
Coordinate with AAF for vet checks
Be available for owner reunification

Good Fit If You

Found a pet and want to help directly
Have flexible timing
Can keep a pet separate from your own
Want to prevent a shelter intake
TC

Temporary Crisis Foster

3 to 14 days (varies by situation)

When a family hits a crisis, sometimes they just need someone to hold their pet for a few days while we help them get back on their feet. Hospitalization, domestic violence, housing emergency, natural disaster. The family is not giving up their pet. They need a bridge.

Your Responsibilities

Keep the pet safe and comfortable
Follow the owner's care instructions
Stay in contact with AAF for updates
Return the pet when the family is ready

Good Fit If You

Want to keep a family together
Can take a pet on short notice
Are comfortable with varying timelines
Care about the human side of animal welfare
RF

Regular Foster

2 to 8 weeks (until adoption)

The classic foster. You open your home to an animal that needs time, space, and love while waiting for their permanent family. Puppies, seniors, medical recovery, animals that just need to decompress outside a shelter environment.

Your Responsibilities

Provide daily care, feeding, and exercise
Administer any prescribed medications
Attend scheduled vet appointments
Help with adoption meet-and-greets

Good Fit If You

Have time for a longer commitment
Love puppies, seniors, or special needs
Want the full foster experience
Can handle the goodbye (we help with that)

Animals Need You Today

These are real animals waiting for real people. The need is constant, and every foster home we add means one more animal stays out of a kennel.

The Bessemer 20: Fosters Needed Now

An elderly man in Bessemer has roughly 17 dogs on his property. He loves them but cannot care for them all. He is cooperating fully. These dogs are calm, friendly, and well-socialized. They did not bark during a 45-minute assessment. They need heartworm testing, spay/neuter, and foster or rescue placement. No pound. No kill shelter. Just families who can take one dog.
